WORKSHOP 1: "Introduction to the Hoop Path":
WHEN/WHERE: Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13th. From 1-4pm both days at The Santa Cruz Dance Company, 2800 Porter Street, Soquel, CA 95073

This two-part workshop will introduce you to the physical challenge and meditative bliss of hoopdance: the energetic flow art of dancing with the sacred circle, the hoop. Hooping can be an exercise, a dance, a meditation. On the Hoop Path, we approach our hoop Practice with shared intentions not only to improve our hooping skill, but also to develop the skills to go Within, as we believe that Inner and Outer strength are inextricably and intimately intertwined. The introductory workshop will be divided into two sections, both taught by master teacher and Hoop Path founder Jonathan Baxter. Together we will focus on building core hooping skills, introducing students to Hoop Path terms such as pe*A*ce, Ritmo, One Tree/Two Tree Hooping, and Two Birds. Depending on where we find our rhythm as a group, we may well get into some of the more physically challenging techniques like Reversing, Breaking, Paddling, Lifts, and Angle Hooping .

WORKSHOP 2: "The Hoop Path Intensive":

WHEN/WHERE: 6:30pm-8:30pm, MONDAY, APRIL 14 The Santa Cruz Dance Company, 2800 Porter Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95073

This workshop is designed for seasoned hoopers who seek to deepen their personal Hoop Practice. We will move into some of the more complex aspects of Hooping, which will definitely include challenges to the Body, but also to the Mind and Spirit. Off-body techniques that require additional concentration, such as Rolling, Point, and Samurai, will be explored, as well as core exercises designed to help you discover reservoirs of Strength you might as yet be unaware of.

Aren't familiar with The Hoop Path yet? Check out this youtube of Baxter and the Hoop Path DVD Trailer.

THE HOOP PATH BIO
Jonathan Baxter picked up a hoop for the first time six years ago, thinking it would help him rehabilitate some injured shoulder muscles. He never dreamed it would develop into a daily meditation that totally transformed him, inside and out. Over the years he has logged in thousands and thousands of hooping hours--what we on the HoopPath call "flight time." Baxter's commitment to his Practice has revealed to him many of the profound subtleties to be found this ecstatic movement. This extensive and direct involvement with "hoopgnosis," coupled with Baxter's unique gifts as a storyteller and guide, make him an extraordinary teacher.

Baxter's longtime student and partner, Ann Humphreys, demonstrates and assists in HoopPath workshops. Ann attended her first HoopPath class in the summer of '05 and became a committed hooper a year later. An insatiable and eager student, she rapidly absorbed the HoopPath teachings and quickly developed her own distinctive hoopstyle. She brings eight years of yoga experience, as well as high energy and an infectious enthusiasm, to HoopPath classes.
Watch Ann Hooping on youtube
Ann Hooping

Bax's course, The Hoop Path, equally emphasizes both the spiritual and the technical dimensions of hoopdance. Through personal story and myth, Baxter deepens the student's metaphorical and physical understanding of a wide variety of hoop moves and dynamics. His connection to his students is genuine and distinctive--as much as help you become skilled and graceful hooper, Bax wants to help you connect to your inner rhythm, and know yourself from that place.

hi everyone,

i just moved back into town and would love to spin some fire.
i heard that it was still happening this sunday at the lighthouse.
i was wondering if anyone is able to bring some biodiesel fuel to use, or if you could let me know where i could purchase some, i would prefer to use that over regular fuel.

Party today @ Laguna Beach Noon-10 p.m.

Howdy kids,

Sparkinzi and Cool Hand Luke are throwing together a last minute beach party (read: renegade) tomorrow at Laguna Beach, about 8 miles north of SCruz. Drive on highway 1 toward Davenport past Red, White and Blue beach a couple miles (hopefully ya'll know where that is, if not, PM me) and you'll see a road on the right called Laguna Rd.

You can park in the little parking lot there on hwy 1 and walk about 1/4 mile or so to the beach.

We are starting at noon and going until 10:00 p.m. or so.

There will be DJs (so far Cool Hand Luke, Sparkinzi, Lucho and possibly Samira)! I'm not sure we can have a bonfire, that remains to be seen, but I bet we can have fire spinners! So bring it!

We will need help bringing the sounds equipment down to the beach and back up when the party is over. Can anyone can help with this task?

Bring warm, comfortable clothes, blankets, beach chairs, drinks to share and food if you wanna munch on stuff.

This is going to be a blast -- I can't wait!

Poi & Staff Dancing Workshops: AUGUST 16TH

Hi Everyone,

I'm announcing 2 workshops today for Thursday, August 16th. We have the Auditorium at the Vets Hall (again), which means plenty of room and now 2 hrs instead of 1.5 (and for the same price). It was so great to have all that space last time and I saw people really branching out and into their bodies, etc... Please come and play and invite anyone who you think may be interested.

THURSDAY AUGUST 16TH
Staff Dancing: 6-8pm
Poi Dancing: 8-10pm
$20 single workshop or $30 for both
Main Auditorium

I'm not requiring pre-registration this time, but would like to know if you are planning to attend. This will help me to gauge if I need to post flyers or not.

Thanks! It will be great to be in that space again with you all. I'm hoping to offer at least one more workshop in September before beginning my career with Cirque du Soleil in October, so stay tuned! I'm also looking to teach two workshops at Burning Man this year if you are attending...

FIRE-DANCING

Learn the art of poi and staff dancing!

These dance-forms (typically used in Fire-dancing) are a great work-out; teaching the body and mind to function symmetrically. These are dance-forms that you can take with you anywhere and which you can easily share with your friends.

My style is very dance based, incorporating acrobatics and some martial arts. I also teach the technical stuff (I've been teaching for 4 years). My passion is in getting "spinners" to move, and discover the potential energy and momentum of the tools they are using (staff or poi).

In brief, I've been dancing all my life, doing fire for seven years, founder and/ or member of several companies (including Santa Cruz's Nocturnal Sunshine, SF's Pyronaughts & Seattle's Pyrosutra)....and currently Cirque du Soleil. I won an award at Burning Man (the world's largest fire-dancing event) this past year for Best Male Fire-Dancer.

You can see me dance (get a since of my style and the style you would be learning) at www.keithbarefoot.com

This will be our fifth FireDrums gathering and we've planned more workshops for fire and flow arts, drumming, yoga and even a Reiki circle. The Santa Cruz redwoods are both incredibly energizing and yet at the same time magically peaceful and serene. This being our fourth year and the fifth gathering, we have grown a wonderful collective of volunteers to help organize and make this opportunity the best possible learning and sharing experience. Please check out the web site and tribe @ ~ http://firedrums.org ~ http://firedrums.tribe.net

Hello fire folks. I heard through the grapevine that Heather is moving out of the area and won't be around to be shin. I think I've turned in the wet towel for good and will be working on other projects this year again.

So that leaves the question, who will lead the Santa Cruz Fire Conclave for 2007? Deadline is March 1 to Crimson so speak up now if you want the group to have a shot at submissions into the great circle. Time to get organized!
The Crucible is actively searching for talented Fire performers to perform in two Grand Finale Shows for the upcoming Fire Arts Festival!!!

This is an opportunity to be part of a choreographed work that celebrates the fire, music and art of the 2006 Fire Arts Festival, and it will be performed in conjunction with our headline performers - the Yard Dogs (on July 14th) and The
> Mutaytor (on July 15th).

This is how the Finale will be coordinated:
Fire artists will perform as part of a choreographed ensemble for one
set at each of the Friday and Saturday night performances, on a
raised berm above the stage and surrounded by fire sculptures. We
welcome staves, chains and hula hoops. There will be one mandatory
rehearsal with fire coordinator, Mystress Fyre, Belva Stone - most likely on
Wednesday, July 12 in the early evening. The first 50 Fire Finale
performers that sign on to perform both Friday & Saturday nights will
receive a $40 stipend - to cover transportation, etc., as well as
access to Friday & Saturday festival performances; fuel for your
performance; a fabulous t-shirt and dinner both nights. We may take
more than 50 fire performers but will not be able to offer the same
level of benefits beyond the first 50 respondents.

Please feel free to PM me or email me with more questions etc!!

Thanks so much!!!

Hello everyone!

This is Ms Laecee typing in...I joined all of you this year on my stilts and had the time of my life. Burning Man has become such an incredible thing to me because of all the effort I have put in the years I have gone. However, this year, I don't want to focus on our camp so much...so I am feeling a void of participation.

If anyone is still interested in participating with the Santa Cruz Conclave this year even without our trusty leader, Kara, I would be interested in being little miss organzier. I have a lot of brain power that needs to be put to work...and this would be perfect. I don't have the fire skills, but I know this is about working together. So, if everyone would be interested in putting our heads together, I will apply to be the go between with Crimson. If not, I hope the conclave rests deep in your hearts, or, if someone else really, really wants to be the foreman...all the power to you!

I've got some news. I've decided not to coordinate the Santa Cruz Conclave for this year's Burn. I've been in the circle for the past 6 years and have coordinated the Santa Cruz group for the past 5. I've decided it's time to take a break. I'm not sure if this will be a 1 year heiatus or a permanent departure.

I wanted to let you all know now so that the group has a chance to find a new leader for this year. Hopefully you all got the recent Fire Conclave announcements from Crimson so you have an idea what's going on. To sum it up; there will be a video submission required, she is reducing the number of people in the circle and it is unclear what will happen with drummers.

Please let me know if you're interested in coordinating so I can let you know more of what is involved and see if you've got the guts to do it!

It's been a real pleasure!

Firedancers at Do-It-Yourself New Year's Parade in Santa Cruz

Firedancers, including the fabulous local troupe Nocturnal Sunshine will be performing. Some will be using glow-poi and other toys to skirt the whole unpermitted fire issue. Want to join this year's New Year's Eve Parade in Santa Cruz?

There's no First Night this year, so we're going to do it ourselves. It's our parade. It's your parade. No city-sponsorship. No corporate donors. We make it happen together. We're calling it

THE LAST NIGHT SANTA CRUZ DIY PARADE
(diy stands for do-it-yourself)

Let's get a group together. Start a marching band. Build puppets. Get our bicycle friends together. Form a dancing troupe. Organize our kid's play group. Anything and everything!

Committed so far: www.lastnightdiy.org/who.html (We'd still like to see Samba bands, marching bands, more music, political groups, a coalition of homeless folks, art cars, zombies, pirates, more kids and parents, and more more of everything in our community)

MEET AT 5PM NEW YEAR"S EVE - SATURN CAFE LOT

Un-organizing meeting: 29 Dec, 6:30, Wired Wash, 135 Laurel St

Has anyone thought about when we might figure out what the stiltists (the bouncing kind) are going to do? I have lots of space up at my house for a rehersal type thing...well...maybe not as much as our meeting space, but a pool to jump in when we are all done sweatin' and jumpin'. I have never worked with fire fingers before, or dancing, so I think we need someone else to step up to the plate to make us some cool moves...

Need to get a head count for who would like to be in the warriors piece so we can get started on choreography.

Also who is interested in spending some coin for a warrior helmet with a flaming plume. A prototype has been acquired and the addition of flame will be taking place this weekend. Will show it next Thurs at practice.
Fire Fingers Workshop Sunday July 17!

Hi everyone!

The Fire Fingers-Making workshop will be held at my house:

This Sunday, July 17 at 2pm

I sent my address to the conclave list, so if you didn't get the email send me a message and I'll give you directions (I don't want to post directions to my house here.)

If you can't make it at 2pm, just come when you can. Theresa warned these take all day, so you'll just have to finish them at home.

PLEASE RSVP either by phone or with a message through Tribe so I know who to expect and how many people to divide the costs by!

You'll need to bring:

A pair of long stretchy gloves (opera/prom type)
Thread in the same color as gloves
Pliers (needle-nosed are best)
Wire cutters (if you have them)
A thimble

I'll provide:

1" Wick
Kevlar thread and needles
16-gauge wire
Wooden dowels to wrap wire

Please also bring money for the supplies I'm providing - I think it'll be about $15 per person.

See you Sunday!
Rehearsal Schedule

Here's the proposed rehearsal schedule for Thursday nights so you can come back and reference it later. It may change a little if we're at different spots in the development of various pieces.

June 9, 16, 23, 30 - Come when you can to work on all of the pieces and equipment you will be involved in. Practice poi doubles play, bring double dutch jump ropes, make a headdress and bring it to show others, play with swords, dance as if you had fingers, practice hula hoop. In general, come to develop your skills and creative ideas so that in July when we start putting pieces together you have a strong sense of what you want to do in the piece. I know the June dates sound loose but I do expect performers to show up a few times to contribute and practice. Please don't take this as "Cool, I don't have to show up until July." If you have legit reasons for not being able to attend Thursday nights, please check in with me if you haven't already. To pay for the rehearsal space, Conclave members will be asked to contribute $3 for each Thursday night attended, non Conclave members pay $5 as it will continue to be open Spin Jam.

July 7 - Fingers and Warriors
Teach fingers choreography. Theresa, Heather and I will be choreographing the fingers piece this year and teaching it to all who are interested. Fingers making workshop will come shortly after. Begin to map out feel of warriors piece. Bring headdress you have been working on.

SUNDAY July 10 - All conclave meeting! Drummers, safety and performers.
This will be an opportunity for more people to meet each other and for us to convey the vision to drummers and safety. It will also be another day of the week to accommodate those who can't make Thursdays. After this the next all group meeting won't be until August. We'll talk more about costumes at this point and start purchasing fabric if need be. Location and time TBA but most likely in the evening and in town. (This will also be the day of the fingers workshop, more to come)

July 14 - Double Dutch, Hula Hoops, Poi
Play with your poi doubles partner, practice hula hoops (make choreography if desired), play and practice double dutch.

July 21 - Warriors, Poi
Continue to work on warrior piece layout and practice poi doubles or single skills.

July 28 - Hula Hoops, Fingers, Poi

August 4 - Warriors, Double Dutch, Fingers

August 11 - All pieces with drummers. Safety come to watch.

August 18 - All pieces with drummers. Safety come to watch.

SUNDAY August 21 - Lit rehearsal, last time together before the playa!

August 25 - No Rehearsal! Pack, fill water, buy food, get an oil change, finish sewing that costume. . .

Hi all.

Just a friendly reminder that our next meeting is tomorrow night at Spin Jam. Not too many folks have been coming so it should be fine to take over the place.

Thursday, June 2
Motion Pacific Dance Studio
8:30-10 pm

Please bring $2-3 exact change to pay for the space.

We'll be developing the creative ideas that were started last time, looking more closely at what Crimson is asking and starting to set up rehearsals for the summer.
